A year after opening in Blue Springs, Plowboys Barbeque said it will open a restaurant in downtown Kansas City.

It plans to take a corner spot on the first floor of the Town Pavilion at 11th and Main Streets. A November opening is scheduled.

Town Pavilion officials couldn’t be reached for comment.

Plowboys said it will target the business lunch crowd. The restaurant will seat 54 people. It will have a cafeteria-style ordering counter to serve hot food fast. It also will have a separate carry-out window for preorders and will have a smartphone app so customers can order and pay in advance.

The owners, Todd Johns and Todd Johnson, said they want to fill a barbecue gap that has been missing in downtown since Lil’ Jake’s Eat It & Beat it left in 2007 for a spot on Southwest Boulevard.

“There’s a large population of folks that work downtown that don’t have access to barbecue and a lot of times they have people coming in from out of town,” Johns said. “When people come to town they definitely want barbecue. When you go downtown you see a lot of catering trucks from other barbecues so you know there is a demand for it.”

Blair Cragg, assistant manager of the Blue Springs location since it opened in September 2013, will be manager of the new location.

The downtown menu will include some favorites like their championship pulled pork, slow smoked brisket, BBQ nachos, and signature burnt ends. Ribs will be available Wednesdays and Fridays. It also will serve box lunches — especially popular for office catering.

Johns and Randy Hinck founded Plowboys in 2001 as a barbecue competition team and the team has since won numerous awards. In 2007, Johns began producing and distributing Plowboys rubs and sauces, which he said are now sold at more than 600 retailers in the U.S., England, the Netherlands and Canada.

The Blue Springs restaurant seats 84 people and offers a drive-through.
